Capsize

By

The longer
I’m aboard,
the stronger
swells
my concern.

I’ve had time to pace
this ship at sea,
and it has been
a steady walk
from wonder to wondering,
from wondering to noticing.

The holes
began to show.

Burbling gouges
line the hull,
and water
makes its way,
crystalline,
the smell of brine;
we’re sinking
on the waves.

But so few others
seem to mind,
most drinking,
feasting,
laughing,
blind.
How much time
till we capsize
and face
our salty grave?
