As the light dimmed,
their hair stood on end.
Then, Darkness and Ambush
were close friends.

So, fear of night
was woven like thread
through every
double helix.

Keep the fire lit,
they said.

Then fire became oil,
and oil became wick.
Wire hum swallowed
candle burn
relatively quick.

Sable skirmishing isn’t
a uniquely
human trick
for lighting bugs
and jellyfish thrum
bioluminescent.

But the burning,
stoking, and
sacrifice are
human
through
and through.

One day soon,
we’ll feed the sun
Neptune, Venus,
our dusty moon
to keep the great
fire ablaze.

Staving off star death,
beating back darkness
all because
of that dire thread
tightly woven and
nucleic.
