Mayan temples
set to reflect
the cosmos-
Shadows cast by
Milkyway mists
in purposeful alignment
with limestone slabs
and staircases.
Compare their monuments-
their star-streaked halls,
to our offices,
carved with
obligatory windows.
New objective:
keep the outside out,
keep the inside in-
keep growing.
We’ve come a long way
since the Mayans,
with our temperature control
and flatscreen
fireplaces.
If I squint from
the roof of my apartment,
the city lights could
be mistaken
for constellations.
Will our sprawling ever end?
Our expansion feels
simultaneously
infinite and
fugacious.
Either way,
I’m impressed.
Impressed and ‘
disquieted.
