I turn my key and enter,
feeling the empty before the
dim and quiet
can register.
Still, I limp off my heels
and call out, knowing
there won’t be an answer.
Silence.
Swallow-swift,
my heart swoops.
Gone is your raincoat,
frayed wallet,
worn shoes.
Where are you?
I unpocket my phone.
Ring…
Ring…
come on…
Ring…
“Hello!“
You breathe.
“Hi! Where’d you go?“
“To meet you,
down by the metro!“
And just like that,
there’s light again,
backed by the easing hum
of air conditioning.
“We must have just
passed each other!“
“Your’e home?“
“Yes, I’m home!“
My heart
and your feet
start beating.
